John was born in 1898 the son of Albert a lace maker and Caroline Mary Calcraft (née Smith) of 73 High Road Beeston Nottingham. His father in 1873 at Nottingham his mother in 1872 at Nuneaton, Warwickshire. Married in 1893 at Nottingham, they had four children. John’s siblings surviving infancy were Mabel b.1896 Warrington and Albert b.1911 Long Eaton. In 1911 the family lived at 46 Victoria Road Long Eaton.
John enlisted in Nottingham and served in 1/7th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) later transferring to the Army Cyclist Corps . He died of wounds at the Zuydcoote Hospital and is buried in Zuydcoote Military Cemetery 2.C.8
In memoriam published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 30th October 1918 : - “CALCRAFT. – In loving memory of our dear son and brother Cyclist Jack Calcraft, who died abroad October 30th, 1917. Not far away, for unbroken is the golden chain of love; it is binding us still together on earth and in heaven above. – Father, mother, sister, and brother, brother-in-law (in France). “CALCRAFT. – In loving memory of our dear nephew, Cyclist Jack Calcraft, died aborad October 30th, 1917. – He fought the good fight. Uncle Charlie, aunt Edie, and cousins. “CALCRAFT. – In loving memory of our dear nephew Jack, died abroad October 30th, 1917. In bloom of life God claimed him. – Aunt Agnes, uncle Alf, Doris, Harry (in France), Ernest (prisoner in Germany).” He was the 21 year-old .
