Seelam Thorpe was born in 1885 at Hackenthorpe, he was the son of the John a grinder and the late Hannah Thorpe née Robinson of 7 Brook Lane, Beighton, Derbyshire. His father John was born in 1854 at Dronfield, he died in 1918 he was aged 64 yrs, his mother Hannah Robinson was born in 1846 at Connisborough, she died in 1913 aged 67 yrs they were married on 3rd September 1877 at St John’s Church Dronfield they had 11 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census his mother Hannah is living at 7 Brook Lane Beighton, hsi mother is 68 yrs old she is living with her son Seelam 26 yrs a coal miner hewer he is shown as a coal miner hewer and is married. Seelam married his wife . Nora (Honoria Keating) in 1906 their marriage was recorded in the Sheffield Registration district, they had children Thomas, born 1909 and Albert, born 1914, they lived at 47 Devonshire Street, Shirebrook. Derbys. In the 1911 census Seelam 26 yrs a coal miner hewer is living with his wife Nora 34 yrs at 7 Devonshire Street, Shirebrook, by the time of Seelams death they were living at 235 Warsop Vale Mansfield
Private Seelam Thorpe enlisted and served with service number 14222 in the Lincolnshire Regiment, he died on 20th August 1922 and is buried on 24th August at St Peters Church, Warsop.
His brother Lance Corporal Arthur Thorpe born 1882 at Hackenthorpe, served with the service number 14888 in the 8th North Staffordshire Regiment, he died on 20th November 1915 at no 3 General Hospital, Glasgow, he is buried at Beighton St Mary’s Church yard
