Benjamin Ibbs was born on 1st January 1895 at Hanley, he was baptised on 17th January 1895 at Etrurua, he was the son of John a general labourer and Mary Ann Ibbs née Cotton of 14 Twemlow Street, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. His father John Ibbs was born in 1868 at Cobridge, Staffordshire, his mother Mary Ann Cotton was born in 1871 at Hanley, they were married in 1890 at Hope Staffordshire and went on to have the following children, John b1890, Thomas 1894 Alfred James b1892, Benjamin b1895, Frederick b1897, Jane b1898, Elizabeth b1901, James b1906, Polly b1908, Joseph b1909 and Annie b1910 all were born in Hanley. In the 1911 census the family are living at 14 Twemlow Street, Hanley and are shown as John 42 yrs a general labourer, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 40 yrs and their children, Alfred James 19 yrs a mining labourer, Benjamin 16 yrs a mould runner, Frederick 14 yrs a mould runner, Jane 13 yrs a scholar, Elizabeth 10 yrs a scholar, James 5 yrs, Polly 3 yrs, Joseph 2 yrs and Annie 1 year of age.
Private Benjamin Ibbs enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Hanley he initially served with the service number 13970 in the Leicestershire Regiment. He landed in France on 8th June 1915 and was killed in action on 12th August 1915 whilst service with the 1st battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment and is buried at Potije Chateau Lawn Cemetery, Belgium.
His older brother, Thomas, was in 1911 living at 5 Victoria Street, Warsop with his uncle and aunt, Benjamin and Mary Cotton. Presumably Benjamin joined him after 1911. Thomas also served but was discharged due to an old injury to his leg.
