George William Harrison was born in 1889 at Mayfield, Staffordshire, he was the son of Jarvis and Mary Harrison née Waring. His father Jarvis was born in 1860 at Snelstone, Derbyshire, his mother Mary Waring was born in 1864 at Wootton, Staffordshire, they were married on 12th June 1880 at St Peters Church, Ellaston, Staffordshire, they went on to have the following children, Francis b1881, Charles Jarvis b1884, Sarah olive b1885, George William b1889 all were born in Wootton and Ethel Mary b1891 Fenton. His pension record card shows his widow to be Florence Beatrice of 7 Herbert Street, Fenton , Staffordshire, she was awarded a pension of 10 shillings a week which commenced on 25th September 1916.
Driver George William Harrison enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the Royal Field Artillery. He landed in France on 10th September 1915. He died of wounds on 9th March 1916 and is buried at Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres.
Letter printed in the Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser; 20/04/1916. "Dear Mrs Harrison, I deeply regret to inform you that your husband was killed while on duty this morning, by a shrapnel bullet. The doctor tells me he died an hour after he had been hit; he was unconscious the whole time, and he did not suffer at all. He is being buried tomorrow. Driver Harrison was thought very highly of in the battery and all the Officers, NCOs and men join with me in expressing their sorrow at your great loss. I am returning his private effects. Yours sincerely, M. Ambrose."
