Family History

George Thomas Getley was born on 19th April 1889 in Cannock, Staffordshire, he was baptised on 7th July 1889 at St Saviours Church, Hatherton, Staffordshire and was the son of Charles a coal miner hewer and Emma Getley née Podmore of Wolverhampton. His father Charles was born in 1864 Bilston, Staffordshire, his mother Emma Podmore was born in 1864 also at Staffordshire, they were married 1886 their marriage was recorded in the Cannock registration district, they went on to have the following children, George Thomas b1889, Eveline Mary b1892, Frank Charles b1897, Alfred Joseph b1900 and Victoria b1903 all were born in the Cannock area. In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at Calf Heath, Wolverhampton and are shown as Charles Getley 46 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Emma 47 yrs and their children, Evelyn Mary 19 yrs a domestic, Alfred Joseph 10 yrs a scholar and Victoria 7 yrs of age. In the same 1911 census we find that George Thomas has left his home address and we find him lodging at Hednesford Road, Norton Canes, Cannock, he is shown as being 22 yrs single and a colliery labour, he is lodging with Alfred Leadbetter 40 yrs a roadman for the council and his family.

Military History

Private George Thomas Getley enlisted at Worksop whilst residing at Shareshill, Staffordshire, he served with the 2/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 2nd April 1917 and is buried at Vendelles Communal Cemetery, France.
