Bertie Clark was born in 1897 at Belper and was the son of John Henry a brick layers labourer and Sarah Ann Clark Née England of 35 Vickers Street, Warsop. His father John Henry Clark was born in 1871 at Wordsworth, Derbyshire, his mother Sarah Ann England was born in 1876 at Shottle, Derbyshire, they were married in 1894 at Belper and went on to have 5 children, sadly 1 died in infancy their surviving children were Bertie b1897 Belper, Grace b1902, Charles b1905, Frances May b1908. In the 1911 census the family are living at 66 Union Street, Mansfield and are shown as John Henry 40 yrs a brick layers labourer, he is living wit his wife Sarah 35 yrs and their children Bertie 14 yrs an errand boy, Grace 9 yrs a scholar, Charley 6 yrs and Francis May 3 yrs old.
Private Bertie Clark enlisted on 10th December 1915 at Warsop giving his age as 18 yrs and his address as 35 Vickers Street, Warsop, he stated he was a bricklayers labourer and his next of kin was his father Henry of the same address he was posted to the reserves. Mobilised for war on 4th September 1916 he initially served with the service number 60774 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment later transferring to 44th coy Machine Gun Corps on 28th November 1916. Embarking from Folkstone on 2nd March 1917 disembarking at Boulogne the same day he was killed in action on 23rd March 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial.
