John Bowskill was born in 1891 at Mansfield and was the son of Thomas a forman navvy and Melody Bowskill née Hooley of 29 Birklands Street, Mansfield. His father Thomas was born in 1863 at Mansfield, his mother Melody Hooley was born in 1861 at Mansfield, they were married in 1883 at Mansfield and went on to have 10 children 1 of whom died in infancy or early childhood, their children all born in Mansfield were Thomas b1883, Mary b1886, Catherine b1888, John b1891, Harriett b1893, Sarah Ann b1895, Ethel b1897, Harry b1899 and George Bowskill b1901 In 1911 census his mother and siblings were living at they lived at 3 Vallances Square Nottingham Road Mansfield and were shown as Melody Bowskill 50 yrs married a gasser in a cotton factory, she is living with her children John 20 yrs a colliery jigger pony driver at Shirebrook colliery, Ethel 14 yrs a doubler, Harry 12 yrs a scholar and George 10 yrs a scholar, In the same 1911 census we find his father Thomas Bowskill, is living as a boarder at 15 Pheasants Hill, Mansfield he is shown as being 48 yrs a forman navy and is boarding with George Butler 48 yrs a railway worker and his family.
Private John Bowskill enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the 2/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action, 29th April 1917, whilst serving in the trenches near Templeux, France and is buried at Templeux-Le-Guerard British Cemetery, France. Plot 1. Row G. Grave 2.
