John Arthur Wood was born in 1886 he was the only son of the late Henry a coal miner hewer and Mary Ann Wood née Stone of 3 Manvers Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. Henry was born in 1862 at Langhton, Lincolnshire he died in 1917 aged 55 yrs, Mary Ann Stone was born in 1862 at Marsden Moor, they were married in 1885 their marriage was recorded in the Chesterfield registration district, they later adopted a daughter Alice Cook born 1897 in Shireoaks. In 1911 the family are residing at 3 Manvers Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, Henry 49 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 49 yrs and their son John Arthur 25 yrs a coal miner pony driver and their adopted daughter Alice Cook 14 yrs of age

Military History

Private John Arthur Wood enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the 7th battalion Leicestershire Regiment landing in France on 29th July 1915 he was killed in action on 14th July 1916. Having no known grave his nbame is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
