Alfred Winterbottom was born in 1883 at Knighton, Leicestershire he was the son of Tom a cordwainer and Hannah Winterbottom of 63 Thoresby Road, Mansfield Woodhouse and 8 Byron Avenue, Mansfield Woodhouse. Both his parents were born in Mansfield, Tom in 1860 and Hannah in 1861.

Military History

Private Alfred Winterbottom enlisted at Doncaster, he served with the 6th battalion York and Lancaster Regiment. He was killed in action on 1st July 1916 the first day of the battle of the Somme. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
