Family History

George Henry Strauther was born in 1897 and was the son of George William a house joiner and Mary Eliza Strauther née Harpham of 23 Herbert Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. George William was born in 1867 at Mansfield, Mary Eliza Harpham was born in 1869 at Selston, they were married in 1893 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district, they went on to have 6 children sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family were living at 28 Park Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, George William is 43 yrs and is a house joiner, he is living with his wife Mary Eliza 42 yrs and their children including George Henry 14 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private George Henry Strauther enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the 4th battalion South Wales Borderers. Landing on 5th December 1915 in the Balkans, he was killed in action on 9th April 1916 in Mesopotamia his name is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.
