Family History

Walter Smith was born in 1891 he was the son of Joseph a general labourer and Ann Smith of 23 Holden Street, Mansfield. Walter married Florence May Wilson (born 29th March 1892) they were married in 1913 and lived at 3 Alexandra Terrace, Lincoln. They had a son Thomas Stanley born 14th September 1915. Commencing 2nd April 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week. His widow remarried on 9th March 1918 William Ernest Richardson and at 10, South Bar Square, Lincoln.

Military History

Private Walter Smith enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the 6th battalion Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. He was killed in action on 16th September 1916 having no known grave hs name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
