Family History

Joseph Shaw was born in 1875 at Sheffield, he married Ella Neale in 1898 at Sheffield and was the father of Joseph, Hetty, Albert, Vincent, Doris and Lionel Shaw. In 1911 they lived at 44 Lordsmill Street, Chesterfield Joseph 36 yrs is a coal miner he is living with his wife Ellen 31 yrs and 3 of their children, Joseph 12 yrs, Hetty 7 yrs and Albert 5 yrs of age. Commencing 10th January 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 23 shillings and 1 pence a week. Ella married Alfred Rushby in 1918 and they lived at 26 Vallance Street Mansfield Woodhouse

Military History

Private Joseph Shaw enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the 1st battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He landed in France on 24th March 1915 and was killed in action on 8th May 1915, Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres, Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium.
