John Edward Roberts was born in 1888 he was the son of Edwin Roberts a coal miner and Elizabeth Roberts née Middleton Edwin Roberts was born in 1866 at Darliston, Staffordshire, Elizabeth Middleton was born in 1869 at Whitwick, Leicestershire, they were married on 9th April 1887 at St John's Church, Hucknall they had a further child Annie born 1889 at Hucknall. John Edward married Cissie Peach (born 12th May 1887)they were married in 1909. and had a son, John (Jackie) born 24th August 1911 they lived at 9 Hospital Terrace, Mansfield Woodhouse. Commencing 27th November 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week.

Military History

Private John Edward Roberts, enlisted at Mansfield on 18th November 1914 and served with the 10th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment. He landed in France on 28th July 1915 and was wounded on 18th November 1915 he died of his wounds on 22nd May 1916 in Hospital in Ireland. He is buried at Mansfield Woodhouse (St. Edmund) Churchyard Extension.

Extra Information

Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser: 01/06/1916. Was in hospital in Dublin and had 9 operations but had contracted meningitis and died on 22/04/1916 aged 29. His wife had been able to get to his bedside and be with him when he died. They had one son, Jackie.
