Family History

Joseph Pursglove was born in 1893 at Tibshelf, he was the son of David a coal miner hewer and Sarah Ann Pursglove née Betts of 74 Church Drive, Shirebrook. David was born in 1853 at Shirebrook, Sarah Ann Betts was born in 1852 at Hucknall they were married on 6th June 1880 at Mansfield, they had 10 children, sadly 6 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 he and his parents were living at 1 Recreation Drive, Shirebrook, David 58 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 59 yrs and Joseph 18 yrs a coal miner onsetter.

Military History

Private Joseph Pursglove enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Shirebrook in March 1915. He served with the 2nd battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He saw active service from 3rd June 1915. He died on 6th July 1916 of heat applexy in the Persian Gulf. He is buried at Amara War Cemetery, Iraq.

Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser: 14/09/1916: Shirebrook Notes & News: Pte J Pursglove of the 2nd Leicestershires has died of heat apoplexy in the Persian Gulf. Has 2 brothers serving, Pte Cephus Pursglove in France and Pte Orman Pursglove who is a prisoner of war.
