Thomas Cyril Powner was born in 1893 at Bulwell he was the son of James a coal miner hewer and Mary Jane Powner née Bonser of 84 Sherwood Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. James was born in 1851 at Lullington, Derbyshire, Mary Jane Bonser was born in 1853 at Measham, Derbyshire, they were married in 1872 their marriage was recorded in the Ashby De La Zouch registration district, they went on to have 7 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family are living at 84 Sherwood Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. James is 60 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Mary Jane 58 yrs and their sons Alfred 27 yrs a gardener and Thomas Cyril 17 yrs a coal miner pony driver.

Military History

Corporal Thomas Cyril Powner enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was taken prisoner of war and died on 8th September 1916 he is buried at Achiet-Le-Grand Communal Cemetery Extension, France. Plot 4. Row Y. Grave 4.
