Family History

Charles Northwood was born in 1894 he was the son of Ernest a coal miner and Margaret Northwood née Hayes of 47 Clumber Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. Ernest was born in 1867 at Maulden, Bedfordshire, Margaret Hayes was born in 1869 at Preston, Lancashire, they were married on 3rd October 1894 at St John's Church, Mansfield, they went on to have 6 children, In 1911 the family are living at 37 Sheepwash Lane, Mansfield Woodhouse. Ernest 44 yrs and is a coal miner, he is living with his wife Margaret 42 yrs and their 6 children, including Charles 15 yrs a coal miner pony driver.

Military History

Private Charles Northwood enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers he died of wounds on 25th February 1916 and is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery, France.

Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser. 08/06/1916: Pte C Northwood of Royal Welsh Fusiliers as died at the 18th General Hospital in France on the 28/02/1916 from wounds received on 23/02/1916 aged 20. The report included a long letter from the nurse who looked after him. He had been shot in the head and his brain had been seriously damaged.
