Thomas Newton was born in 1890 he was the son of John a farm labourer and Jane Newton, née Exton of The Cottage, Newlands, Forest Town. John was born in 1849 at Great Hale, Jane Exton was born in 1852 at Long Thorpe, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1874 at Sleaford, they had 7 children In 1911 the family are living at The Cottage, Newlands Farm, Forest Town, John 62 yrs is a farm labourer he is living with his sons William 23 yrs a farm woodman and Thomas 20 yrs a coal miner, he mother is not at the address on the night of the 1911 census, she is in fact a patient at the Accident Hospital at Mansfield

Military History

Private Thomas Newton enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Mansfield Woodhouse, he served with the 9th battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He landed in France on 14th September 1915, he was killed in action on 25th September 1916. Having no known memorial his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
