Harry Oscar Marsh was born in 1890 the son of George a coal miner hewer and Mary Lydia Evans, of 48 Market Street, Shirebrook. George was born in 1860 at Shirebrook, Mary Lydia Evans was born in 1864 at Cuckney, they were married in 1886 their marriage was recorded in the Worksop registration district, they went on to have 14 children, 1 sadly died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 his parents and he and 10 of his siblings are living at 48 Market Street, Shirebrook, George is 51 yrs and a coal miner hewer he is living with his wife Mary Lydia 47 yrs and their children including Harry Oscar 21 yrs a coal miner. Harry Oscar married Ivy Plant, (born 5th November 1888) on 17th April 1911 at the Parish Church at Shirebrook , Ivy brought a child to the marriage Mary Plant born 17th December 1906, they had two further children, Willie, born 16th May 1913 and Oliver born 6th August 1915, they lived at 45 Portland Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. Commencing 16th December 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 29 shillings and 7 pence a week. Ivy remarried Edward Reeves in 1919.

Military History

Private Harry Oscar Marsh initially enlisted on 9th September 1914 at Mansfield, giving his age as 24 yrs and 259 days he was a coal miner posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment with the service number 16517 but was discharged on 23rd October 1914 as unlikely to become an effective soldier (varicous veins). He either re enlisted or was called up for service and this time served with the 1st battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He was taken as a prisoner of war and died in captivity on 21st April 1918 and was buried at Rue Petillon Military Cemetery, France.

Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser: 28/11/1918: Roll of Honour. Pte Harry Marsh service number 15102, 1st Lincolnshire Regiment. Reported missing 16/04/1918 but now confirmed as dying of wounds on 21/04/1918 whilst a prisoner of war.
