Family History

Wilfred Copestake was born in 1895 he was the son of Oliver Samuel a coal miner hewer and and Eliza Ann Copestake née Dawkins of 140 Sherwood Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. Oliver Samuel was born in 1869, Eliza Ann Dawkins was born in 1870 they were both born in Newhall, Derbyshire, they were married on 4th February 1890 at Newhall and went on to have 6 children, sadly one died in infancy. In 1911 the family lived at 140 Sherwood Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, Oliver is 42 yrs and a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Eliza 41 yrs and their 5 children including Wilfred 16 yrs a coal miner pony driver

Military History

Sapper 158557 Wilfred Copestake, enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the 252nd Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers. He was killed in action on 15th October 1916 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
