Family History

George Burgin (junior) was born in 1895 he was the son of George Burgin (senior) a coal miner and the late Maria Burgin née Bateman of 35 Coke Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. George Burgin (senior) was born in 1864 at Tenton, Lincolnshire, Maria Bateman was born in 1869 at Greasley she died in 1906 she was 37 yrs, they were married in 1886 their marriage was recorded in the Worksop registration district, they went on to have 9 children, sadly 3 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family are living at 35 Coke Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, George 47 yrs is a widow and a coal miner he is living with his six children including George 15 yrs a coal miner pony driver

Military History

Private George Burgin enlisted at Mansfield , he initially served with the service number 15534 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment , he was killed in action on 23rd October 1916 whilst serving with the 2nd battalion East Lancashire Regiment. Having no known grave his name is commemorated ion the Thiepval Memorial.

Photograph printed in Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser 04/03/1915 and 30/11/1916. His older brother, Ernest had also served with the Sherwood Foresters but had been transferred to the reserves due to bronchitis, asthma and eczema.
