Family History

John Edward Burbridge was baptised on 4th September 1899 at St Edunds Church, Mansfield Woodhouse, he was the son of Thomas a coal miner hewer and the late Martha Burbridge née Frith of 29 Old Mill Lane Mansfield Woodhouse. Thomas was born in 1863 at Alfreton, Martha Frith was born in 1867 at Mansfield Woodhouse she died in 1915 aged 48 yrs, they were married on 27th December 1887 at the Methodist Chapel, Mansfield, they went on to have 8 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family were living at 45 Brownlow Road, Mansfield, Thomas is 48 yrs and a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Martha 44 yrs four of their children including John Edward 12 yrs of age

Military History

Private John Edward Burbridge enlisted 10th January 1917 at Mansfield, giving his age falsely as 19 yrs and 297 days (he was born in 1899 and was therefore 18 yrs) , he was an unemployed coal miner He served initially with the Royal Field Artillery and was serving with the 10th battalion Durham Light infantry when he died of wounds on 26th August 1917, at the 64th Casualty clearing station, France he is buried at Mendingham Military Cemetery, France.
