William Broughton (junior) was born in 1889 at Uffington he was the son of William Broughton (senior) a farm labourer and Elizabeth Simpson of 71 High Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. William Broughton (senior) was born in 1853 at Wakerley, Northamptonshire, Elizabeth Simpson was born in 1855 at Newark upon Trent, they were married in 1875 their marriage was recorded in the Caistor registration district, they went on to have 11 children, sadly 3 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at 22 Warsop Road, Mansfield Woodhouse, William 58 yrs is a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 56 yrs and their son Arthur 18 yrs a woollen mill overlooker. In 1911 William Broughton (junior) has left the family home, he is serving in the Army, he is shown as being 23 yrs of age, single and is a Private Soldier in the 2nd battalion Leicestershire regiment in barracks in India.

Military History

Lance Corporal William Broughton enlisted on 21st May 1906 at Leicester, giving his age as 18 yrs and 1 month, his occupation was that of a groom. He served with the Leicestershire Regiment. He served in India from 5th March 1910 until 19th September 1914. He then travelled to France landing on 11th October 1914 and was promoted to Lance Corporal on 13th July 1915. He was killed in action on 25th September 1915 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial
