Family History

Herbert Brocklehurst (senior) a coal miner hewer was born in 1871 at Chesterfield, he married Mary Homer born 1872 Chesterfield on 13th October 1890 at Newbold, they had 13 children, sadly five were to die in infancy or early childhood. their surviving children were Herbert-1891, Winifred-1893, Lizzie-1895, Ernest-1901,Florence-1903, Arthur-1906, Alfred-1908, James-1910, Charles H -1912 died 1914 and twins Lily & Charles born and died December 1914. In 1911 the family are living at 108 Coke Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, Herbert is 40 yrs and a coal miner, he is living with his wife Mary 39 yrs and 8 of their children including Herbert 30 yrs a coal miner.

Military History

Private Herbert Brocklehurst, enlisted on 22nd October 1914 giving his age (falsely) as 40 yrs and 337 days, (he was born in 1871 which would have made him 43 yrs ) he was a coal miner, he served with the 11th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment. He landed in France on 18th March 1915 however was returned to England on 26th March 1915 suffering from bronchitis. He returned to France on 3rd February 1916 and was killed in action on 6th May 1916. He is buried in Becourt Military Cemetery, Becordel-Becourt.

Extra Information

Lily and Charles both died of bronchitis within 3 weeks of birth over the Christmas period in 1914. The eldest son, Herbert was killed on 09/07/1917 whilst serving with the Sherwood Foresters. Mary received a pension for herself and the 6 youngest surviving children of 29 shillings a week commencing 20th November 1916.
