Walter Bennett was born in 1880 he was the son of the late Harry a railway plate layer and Rebecca Bennett née Sims of 24 Booth Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. Harry Bennett was born in 1846 at Sutton in Ashfield, he died in 1910 aged 64, Rebecca Sims was born in 1849 also in Sutton in Ashfield, they were married on 25th December 1876 at St Edmunds Church, Mansfield Woodhouse, they went on to have 8 children sadly 1 died in infancy Walter married Lily Bingham (born 20th May 1881) married on 21st January 1911 they had children, Evelyn May born 27th May 1912 and Lillian Maria, born 16th August 1916 they lived at 52 Albion Street, Mansfield after the war. In 1911 Walter is living at 31 Charles Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, he is living with his new wife at her widowed mothers address of 31 Charles Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, Sarah Ann Bingham 62 yrs a widow is living with two of her sons James and Harry Bingham, Walter Bennett is 31 yrs an insurance agent and Lily Bennett 29 yrs. In 1911 his widowed mother Rebecca Bennet was living at 41 Albert Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, she is 62 yrs a widow she is living with her sons and a daughter
Private Walter Bennett enlisted on 11th December 1915 at Mansfield giving his age as 35 yrs and 26 days his address was 24 Booth Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, he was posted to the reserves. He was mobilised for war on 6th October 1916 at Derby and was posted to the 1/6th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment . Embarking from Folkstone on 5th April 1917 landing the same day at Boulogne. He was killed in action, 24th September 1918, aged 38, near Pontruet, France, during the advance towards St Helene, France. Buried Roisel Communal Cemetery Extension, France. Plot 1. Row J. Grave 8.
