Family History

William Thomas known as Thomas was born in 1893 and was baptised on 20th August 1893 at the parish church at Ulverston, Lancashire he was the son of Edward a coal miner hewer and Mary Ellen Ainsworth née Tyson of 13 Manvers Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. Edward was born in 1861, Mary Ellen Tyson was born in 1870 both were born in Ulvaston, they were married on 30th May 1887 at the parish church at Ulverton, they went on to have 10 children sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family are living at 53 Thoresby Road, Mansfield Woodhouse, Edward 50 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Ellen 41 yrs and 7 of their children including Thomas 17 yrs a coal miner pony driver.

Military History

Private William Thomas Ainsworth enlisted 26th August 1914 at Mansfield aged 21 years and 60 days he was a coal miner. He joined the Sherwood Foresters Regiment the following day at their Depot at Derby. He embarked at Liverpool on 01st July 1915 and disembarked at Cape Helles on 21st July 1915. He was killed less than 3 weeks later but it wasn't until 26th June 1917 that it was officially confirmed he had been killed on 09th August 1915 in the attack at Ismail Oglu Tepe, (Chocolate Hill), Gallipoli, Turkey. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli.
