James William Massey was born in 1895, he was baptised on 1st September 1895 at the Parish Church at Blackwell he was the son of the late William John a coal miner hewer and the late Mary Ann Massey née Taylor of Pleasley Hill. William John was born in 1874 at Horley, Oxford, he died in 1913 he was aged 39 yrs, Mary Ann Taylor was born in 1874 she died prior to 1910 they were married on 22nd May 1893 at Fenny Compton, Warwickshire, they had 3 children. His father remarried in 1909 in Mansfield to Elizabeth Brindley born 1883 at Pleasley they had a son Albert William born 1910 at Plealsey Hill. In 1911 his family are living at 18 Hillmore Street, Plealsey Hill William John 37 yrs is a coal miner hewer, living with his second wife Elizabeth 28 yrs and his sons James William 15 yrs a coal miner pony driver and Albert William 1 year old.

Military History

Lance Corporal John William Massey enlisted at Mansfield, he went to France on 27th August 1915. He died of wounds 8th July 1916, aged 20, received on the 1st July 1916 at Ovillers, France on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Buried: Warloy-Baillon Communal Cemetery Extension, France. Plot 3. Row C. Grave 18.
