Family History

George Harry was the son of Harry and Clara Ann White. Harry and Clara Wilson were married in 1873 (J/A/S, registration district Chesterfield), and had ten children born alive of whom only eight were still living at the time of the 1911 census. Eight children are named on the census between 1881 and 1911: Helena Mary, William Francis/William Harold, Clara Evelyn, Jessie Elizabeth, George Harry, Ada Gladys, Beatrice Hilda and John Watson. All the children were born in Mansfield. In 1881 Harry and Clara were living at 10 Victoria Street, Mansfield. Harry was a master draper's assistant. They had three children, Helena (6), William (3) and Clara (1). Ten years later in 1891 they were living at 8 Market Street, Mansfield. Eight children were recorded on the census: Helen, William, Clara, Jessie Elizabeth (9), George Harry (6), Ada Gladys (4), Beatrice Hilda (2) and an unnamed child who was just one month old. They had moved again by 1901 and were were living at 153 Nottingham Road, Mansfield, in the ecclesiastical parish of St Mark. Harry was now a draper (employer). Seven children were at home on the night of the census; William (draper's assistant), Clara (no occupation), Jessie (assistant teacher), George (sadler's apprentice), Ada, Beatrice and John (9). By 1911 the family home was at Forest Villas, Mansfield, and although Harry was not in the household on the night of the census his wife and four of his children, George (butcher), Ada (no occupation), Beatrice (asst. school mistress) and John (electrician) were at home. At the time of Harry's death on 26 November 1915 at the age of 71 the family was living at 175 Nottingham Road, Mansfield. His widow died at the age of 86 on 4 February 1937; she was living at 44 Nottingham Road, Mansfield.

Military History

He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial (Panel Ref: Pier and Face 10C 10D and 11A). He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
