Family History

James Udall was born in 1894 at Mansfield and was the son of the late George a corporation labourer and Lizzie Udall née Griffin of 7 Bradder Street, Mansfield. His father George was born in 1852 at Mansfield he died in 1904 aged 52 yrs, his mother Lizzie Griffin was born in 1862 at Thame, Oxfordshire, they were married in 1882 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district, they went on to have the following children all of whom were born at Mansfield, Emily b1883, Florence b1885, George Henry b1887, Lizzie b1888, Joseph b1893, James b1894, Edward b1896, Bertie b1901 and Lily b1903. His mother Lizzie went on to marry Arthur Shelton a coal miner in 1910 at Mansfield, and in the 1911 census the family are shown living at 7 Bradder Street, Mansfield and are shown as Arthur Shelton 51 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Lizzie Shelton 50 yrs and her children, Joseph 18 yrs a colliery banksman, James 17 yrs a colliery pony driver (underground) Edward 15 yrs a colliery pony driver (underground) Bertie 10 yrs a scholar and Lily 8 yrs a scholar. James went on to marry his wife Alice Knight (born 21st March 1893) in 1913 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield Registration district, they lived at 7 Portland Street, Pleasley Hill and had two children, Gladys Annie born 1st March 1915 and James Wilfred born 5th September 1917. Folowing his death his widow Alice was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence which commenced on 8th April 1918.

Military History

Lance Corporal James Udall enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and died of wounds on 29th September 1917 and is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.

Extra Information

His brother Private George Henry Udall enlisted at Eastwood on 12th December 1916 whilst residing at Nottingham, he served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 21st November 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial.
