Claude St John Freeman was born in 1892 in Nottingham and was the son of George Henry a brick layer and Jane Elizabeth Slawson née Slawson of 205 Exchange Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham His father George was born on 10th June 1848 in Nottingham and his mother Jane Elizabeth had been born in 1853 in Whiston, Yorkshire, they were married in the Rotherham registration district on 19th March 1874 and went on to have five children : - Lucy Harrietta b1876, Maud Mary 1882, George Ephrain b1879, Florence Evelyn Kate b1889 and Cluade St John Freeman b1892 all the children were born in Nottingham except Florence who was born in Sutton in Ashfield. In the 1901 census the family are living at 352 Meadow Lane Nottingham By the 1911 census only his parents George Henry and Jane Elizabeth are living at the family home at 31 Mable Grove, Crocus Street, Meadows, Nottingham , George is now 64 yrs of age and Jane is 59 years of age , all of their children have left the family home. It has not been possible to trace Claude on the 1911 census. His probate record, proved at Nottingham on 8th April 1919 shows him as Claude Freeman Slawson of 205 Exchange Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham , a private in his majesties army , died 16th July 1918 at Friedrichsfeld, Germany , his effects of £147, 0 shillings and 10 pence to George Henry Slawson (his father) a bricklayer. His father George died in 1921 aged 72 yrs and his mother died in 1922 aged 69 yrs.
Pte. Claude Freeman Slawson, enlisted in Derby and served with 2nd Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he first entered a theatre of war in France on 10th November 1914. He was captured on 13th February 1915 and died whilst a prisoner of war on 16th July 1918, his death was confirmed by a family notice published on 11th September 1918.He is buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery,
Following is the notice from the 'Nottingham Evening Post', 11th September 1918. “SLAWSON. – Pte. C.F. Slawson, K.O.Y.L.I., prisoner of war in Germany (4 years), reported died July 16th, 1918. – From his sorrowing father and mother.”
