Family History

Oliver Sheppard was born in 1882 at Coleshill, Warwickshire, he was the son of Reuben Sheppard a general labourer and the late Ellen Sheppard née Orton of 98 Nottingham Road, Derby. Reuben was born in 1855 at Sutton, Gloucestershire, Ellen Orton was born in 1853 at Coleshill, she died in 1901 aged 48 yrs in Warwickshire they were married in 1874 at Coledhill, Warwickshire they had 5 children, Oliver, Sidney, Ellen Elsie and Harry. Following his mother’s death he father re married in 1902 at Kirk Norton, Warwickshire to Emma Rowley born 1853 Coleshill. In the 1911 census the family are living at 17 Raymoned Road, Saltley, Birmingham, Reuben is 57 yrs and a general labourer, he is living with his second wife Emma 59 yrs and their son Harry 15 yrs of age. In the same 1911 census we find Oliver has joined the Army, he is living in barracks in India with the Worcestershire Regiment, he is a Private and is 26 yrs of age. The connection with Nottingham has yet to be made.

Military History

Private Oliver Sheppard enlisted at Birmingham whilst residing at Derby, he served with the 2nd battalion Worcestershire Regiment he was killed in action on 16th May 1915 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
