Family History

George Greathead was born in 1892 he was the son of the late Fred a corn miller and Fanny Greathead née Dyas, of Lincolnshire. Fred was born in 1863 at Stickley, Lincolnshire he died in 1897 aged 34 yrs, Fanny Dyas was born in 1864 at Elkington, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1887 in Lincolnshire and went on to have 4 children. In 1911 George has left the family home, he is living at 42 Goldsmith Street, Mansfield, he is shown as being 19 yrs single a grocers assistant, he is living with William Van Moreland 26 yrs a tramway motorman.

Military History

Lance Corporal George Greathead enlisted in Mansfield, he served with the 1st battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He was on active service from 17th February 1915 and was killed in action on 1st May 1915 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium.
