Family History

Charles Baker Willoughby was born in 1899 at Mansfield, the only son of Charles and Alice Willoughby née Baker of Bridgend Farm, Big Barn Lane, Mansfield. Charles snr. was born in 1865 at Cropwell Butler, Nottinghamshire, and Alice Baker was born in 1873 at Peterborough. They were married in 1897; the marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district. In 1911 the family was living at Bridgeford Farm, Big Barn Lane, Mansfield: Charles 46 yrs a farmer, his wife Alice 38 yrs and their son Charles Baker 12 yrs a horseman on a farm. The later CWGC record gave his parents' address as 55 Lindhurst Avenue, Blidworth near Mansfield.

Military History

Private Christopher Charles Willoughby was called up for service on 19th June 1918 at Nottingham and posted to the 5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. Admitted to Louth V.A.D hospital on 3rd Jul 1918, he died on 6th July 1918 of pneumonia and is buried at Mansfield (Nottingham Road) Cemetery (grave ref. B.6636). He had served for 37 days.
