Joan was the daughter of Joseph and Lily Hopkinson of 42 Henry Street, Sneinton. Injured at the Dakeyne Street shelter, she died the same day at the St. Catherine First Aid Post. Joan’s sister Winifred Mary Hopkinson also perished in the Dakeyne Street shelter during the raid of May 9th 1941.
The Dakeyne Street Communal Shelter was located under Black’s lace factory at the junction of Dakeyne Street and Carlton Road, Nottingham. During the raid of May 9th 1941, the shelter sustained a direct hit which killed twenty two people, fifteen of them children. ‘The raid seemed to last all night,’ recalled Jean Taylor in 1998. ‘The following morning my granddad and uncle and my mum went to see the damage caused by the bombs. The Dakeyne Street air raid shelter was gone completely. Among the rubble were parts of bodies. Many people were crying and others sick with shock at the dreadful scene.’
