Horace Edwin was born in 1889 in Nottingham and was the only child of Edwin a gas inspector and Elizabeth Porter née Dexter of 34 Shelton Street, Nottingham. His father Edwin was born in 1866 in Nottingham and his mother Elizabeth Dexter was born in 1867 also in Nottingham. They were married in 1888 in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 34 Shelton Street, Nottingham and are shown as Edwin 45 yrs a gas inspector he is living with his wife Elizabeth 44 yrs and their son Horace Edwin 22 yrs a clerk for a needle work manufacturer . Horace Edwin marries his wife Edith Mary Skelton in 1914, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they go on to have two children , Phyllis M born 1914 and John E born 1915 both born in Nottingham, they lived at 10, George Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham
Gunner Horace Edwin Porter, enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 6th Light Armoured Motor Battery, Machine Gun Corps (Motors) He died in Hamadan, Persia, on 8th June 1918. He is buried in Tehran War Cemetery.
Obituaries published 29th June 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “PORTER. – On the 8th June, died in hospital abroad, Gunner H. E. Porter, M.M.G. Section, aged 28, the dearly beloved husband of E. M. Porter, 10, George-road, West Bridgford. A noble life laid down. – From his broken-hearted wife and children. “PORTER. – On 8th June, died in hospital abroad, Gunner H. E. Porter, M.M.G. Section, the only and dearly loved son of Mr. and Mrs. Porter, 40, Shelton-street.
