He was the son of Richard and Selina Patrick and the brother of George, Sarah Elizabeth, James Anderton (killed in action 26/9/1917), Richard Frederick, William, and Percy Ewatt Patrick. In 1901 the family lived at 180, London Road and in 1911 at 120, Lady Bay Road, West Bridgford (both Nottingham).
