Charles Thomas Burgess was born on 9th October 1894 at Burntwood, he was the son of William Burgess a coal miner hewer and Elizabeth Burgess née Wright of 12 Carter Lane, Mansfield, his father William was born in 1867 at Staffordshire, his mother Elizabeth Wright was born in 1868 at Wilencote, Warwickshire, they were married on 3rd October 1892 at Chasetown, St Anns, Staffordshire,they went on to have 8 children. In the 1911 census the family are living at 111 New Victoria Street, Mansfield, William 44 yrs is a coal miner hewer he is living with his wife Elizabeth 43 yrs, they are living with their 8 children, including Charles Thomas 16 yrs a colliery road lad.

Military History

Private Charles Thomas enlisted on 2nd June 1915 at Mansfield.giving his age as 22 yrs and 40 days, he was living at 12 Carter Lane, Mansfield He went to France on 6th March 1916 and suffered gunshot wounds to his left leg on 31st July 1917. He was admitted to No. 54 General Hospital, Wimereux, on 2nd August 1917 and was transferred to England on Hospital Ship St. David, on 9th August 1917. He returned to France on 14th November 1917 and was captured at Bullecourt, 21st March 1918 and died as a prisoner of war, 12th November 1918, aged 24.Buried: Heverlee War Cemetery, Belgium. Plot 11. Row C. Grave 1.

Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser: 13/02/1919: Died after Liberation. Mr and Mrs Burgess of 12 Carter Lane have been notified that their son, Pte Charles Thomas Burgess who had been reported missing, had died 12 hours after being released from German captivity on 12/11/1918.
