Family History

John William Lyon was born on 3rd April 1877 at Spalding, Lincolnshire, he was the son of John Robert a lamp lighter and Rebecca Lyon née Rutland of 11 Cardiff Street, Nottingham. His father John Robert was born in 1853 at Spalding, his mother Rebecca Rutland was born in 1856 at Swinehead, Lincolnshire, they were married on 19th July 1876 at St Mary’s Church, Spalding they went on to have 5 children, their children were Albert b1882, Robert b1885, Ada b1889 and Nellie In the 1911 census the family are living at 11 Cardiff Street, Nottingham, John Robert 58 yrs is a lamp lighter he is living with his wife Rebecca 63 yrs and their marriage daughter Ada Winters 22 yrs a blouse machinist. John William Lyon married Emma Jane Stark (born 30th September 1875) on 9th October at St Saviours Church, Nottingham, they had the following children, John William born 18th August 1901, Harry born 18th May 1903, Ethel May born 25th July 1905, Edith Nora born 9TH July 1907 and Frank born 4th May 1914, the family lived at 20 Highfield Grove, West Bridgford, Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family were living at 20Highfield Grove West Bridgford, John William 30 yrs is a brick maker, he is living with his wife Emma 29 yrs and their 4 children. Commencing 1st May 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 27 shillings a week.

Military History

Lance Corporal John William Lyon enlisted at Nottingham on 7th November 1914 giving his age as 36 yrs and 218 days, he was a brick maker, he was posted to the 6th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He landed at Sulva Bay on 7th August 1915 and was wounded on Gallipoli, he was evacuated to Lemnos in Greece where he died on 12th October 1915, he is buried at East Murdos Military Cemetery, Greece.
