Family History

Albert White was born in 1895 at Swadlincote and was the son of the late Alexander a clay miner and Annie White née Gadsby of Main Street, Underwood. His father Alexander was born in 1867 at Church Greasley, he died on 1st June 1903 at Church Greasley he was 37 yrs of age. They were married in 1889 at Swadlincote and went on to have the following children, Alexander b1890, Wilfred b1892, Harry b1894, Albert b1895, Lilly b1900, Ethel b1902, all were born in Swadlincote. His mother re married in 1905 to James Reece (born 1859 Dudley their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district they went on to have the following children, Thomas Reece b1904, Florence Reece b1906 and Jim Reece b1908 all were born in Underwood. In the 1911 census the family were living at Wheeler Gate Underwood and were shown as James Reece 52 yrs a collier, he is living with his wife Annie Reece 42 yrs and children, Alexander White 21 yrs a collier, Wilfred White 19 yrs a collier, Harry White 17 yrs a collier, Albert White 14 yrs a collier, Lilly White 11 yrs a scholar, Ethel White 9 yrs a scholar, Thomas Reece 7 yrs a scholar, Florence Reece 5 yrs and Jim Reece 3 yrs of age. All four brother served during the Great War and Harry was killed in action 10/10/1916.

Military History

Rifleman Albert White enlisted shortly after the outbreak of the war he served with the 9th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps. The battalion landed in France on 20th May 1915 and Albert was taken a prisoner of war . Due to his injuries he was invalided home and on 17th November 1916 was discharged from the Army due to his wounds. He was awarded a Silver War Badge 73574 and died on 2nd November 1919 and is buried at St Michael's and All Angels church at Underwood. He is not recorded on the CWGC website.

Extra Information

His brother Private Harry White enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Underwood, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 10th October 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. Two headstones in Underwood (St Michael and All Angels) churchyard: Family headstone: In memory of Harry White who died in battle, Oct 10th 1916 aged 23 years, and Albert White, prisoner of war, invalided home and died Nov 2nd 1919 aged 22 years. Memorial: A tribute of respect and esteem to Harry White 17th Sherwood Foresters and Albert White 5th Kings Royal Rifles, from comrades and friends.
