Louis Albert was born in 1881 in Calverton and was the only son of Louis Albert (senior) a refreshments caterer and Sarah Ann Lendis, née Baker. His father Louis Albert (senior) was born in 1863 in Yarmouth Lincolnshire and his mother Sarah Ann Baker was born in Fulbeck Lincolnshire, they were married in 1881 in Nottingham, they went on to have a daughter Ada b1883 in Nottingham and also adopted a further daughter Gladys b1896 in Manchester. In the 1901 census the family are living at the Refreshment House , in the Arboretum in Nottingham. Louis Albert (junior) married his wife on Florence Faulkner on 15th September 1906 in Nottingham , they went on to have a son Louis Albert Stanley born 1st May 1908 in West Bridgford. In the 1911 census Louise Albert (junior) is living with his family at 9 Ella Road, West Bridgford, he is shown as being 29 yrs head of the family and a clothing clerk, he is living with his wife Florence 30 yrs and their son Louis Albert Stanley 2 yrs, also living at the address is Edith Jane Faulkner 28 yrs a sewing machinist his sister in law and also Arthur Edward Faulkner 26 yrs a fitter his brother in law. In the same census we find his parents now living at 2 Cramer Street, Nottingham, and are shown as Louis Albert 48 yrs a refreshments caterer, he is living with his wife Sarah 48 yrs and their adopted daughter Gladys 15 yrs a racker of dry goods. His younger sister Ada Elizabeth Lendis is married in Nottingham in 1906 to Ernest Bradley Harrison, they have a daughter Margaret Joan born 1910. In the 1911 census they are to be found living at 15 Cranmer Street, Nottingham and are shown as Ernest Bradley Harrison a warehouseman 33 6yrs head of the family, he is living with his wife Ada Elizabeth 27 yrsand their daughter Margret Joan 1 yr. Following the death of Louis Albert (junior) his widow Florence Lendis, was living at 9A, Wellington Crescent, West Bridgford, Nottingham.
Private Louis Albert Lendis, attested on 10th December 1915 at Nottingham , he was 34 yrs and 8 months of age, his address was 88 Ella Road West Bridgford, his next of kin was his wife Florence of the same address. His occupation was that of a manager in a ladies department in a clothiers, his religion was that of Church of England. He was placed into the reserves the following day. He was mobilised for war on 11th August 1916 and joined the Royal Flying Corps as a balloon hand 2nd class air mechanic. and went to Farnborough on 14th August 1916 for training. On 20th November 1916 he landed in France and on 17th September 1917 he was attached to the Royal Naval Division for training as an infantry personal. On 2nd October he was transferred to the 10th battalion Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment , being give the service number 72283. He went missing during action on 22nd April 1918 and was officially reported as being killed in action on that date on 8th September 1918. He is buried in Aveluy Wood Cemetery (Lancashire Dump), Mesnil-Martinsart.
Personal dedication on CWGC headstone: 'Self-sacrificing to the last' Obituary notices published in the Nottingham Evening Post on 27th January 1919 :- “LENDIS. – Reported missing, April 22nd, 1918, now reported killed in action, Avelny [sic] Wood, on that date, Pte. Louis Albert Lendis, 10th Sherwood Foresters, dearly loved husband of Florence Lendis, 88 Ella-road, West Bridgford. – Sorrowing wife [Florence] and son “LENDIS. – Reported missing, April 22nd, 1918, now killed in action on the above date, Pte. Louis Albert, 10th, aged 37, only son of Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Lendis, Cranmer-grove, Nottingham, 22 years with Messrs. W. Dixon and Co. Ltd., Hounds-gate. “LENDIS. – Reported missing, April 22nd, 1918, now killed in action, Pte. Louis Albert Lendis, 10th Sherwood Foresters, dearly loved brother of Mr. and Mrs. E. B.
