Charles was the son of Joseph and Annie Newton (née Drury). His father Joseph Newton was born in Colston Bassett in 1861. His mother Ann was born in South Scarle, near Newark, in 1864, the daughter of William and Sarah Drury, and was baptised at the parish church of St Helena in January 1864. They were married in 1886 and had seven children who were born in Colston Bassett; the five eldest were baptised at St John the Divine: Isaac Frederick b. 1886; Eliza b. 1887; Elizabeth b.1890; Lucy b. 1893; Charles b. 1897 bap. 27 June 1897; Joseph b. 1900 and Herbert William b. 1903. In 1891 Joseph a farm labourer, and Ann were living in the village with their three children, Isaac (5), Eliza (3) and Elizabeth (6m.). By 1901 Joseph and Ann had six children: Isaac a farm boy, Eliza, Elizabeth, Lucy (7), Charles (4) and Joseph (under 1y). Their seventh child, Herbert, was born two years later. The family was still living in Colston Bassett in 1911. Joseph was a coalman (domestic). Only four of their children were in the home on the night of the census: Isaac a wagoner, Charles a day boy (domestic), Joseph and Herbert (7). Elizabeth was living on Henry Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham, a general domestic servant in the household of Charles A Morriss, district auditor (railway company), and his family, while Lucy was also living on Henry Road, a general domestic servant in the household of Charles Morriss snr, a retired railway auditor and his wife. Eliza has not yet been traced on the census. Charles' mother Ann died in 1929 and his father Joseph in 1943. His brother Isaac served in the war in the Royal Field Artillery (165798 Driver).
2/6th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) Charles was killed in action on 21 March 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France (Bay 7).
