Family History

William Stocks was born in 1882 at South Normanton, he married Sarah Ann Longton (born 21st December 1888) in 1908 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district. In 1911 the family lived at West End Sutton in Ashfield, William 29 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 30 yrs. Commencing 26th February 1917 his wiodw was awarded a pension of 10 shillings a week.

Military History

Private William Stocks enlisted at Sutton in Ashfield on 21st December 1914 he was killed in action on 12th August 1916 and is buried at at Quarry Cemetery, Mountauban, Somme

Notts Free Press , August 1916. Official news was received on Saturday to the effect that the name of Private William Stocks, 10 Carsic Lane, Sutton, must be added to the long list of miners who have given their life for their country. Prior to his enlistment with the Notts and Derbys in December 1914, Private Stocks worked at the Brierley Hill Colliery. and was 34 years of age. He was killed in action in France on August 12th.
