Samuel Shawcroft

Samuel Shawcroft was born in 1875 and was the son of George a coal miner and his first wife the late Elizabeth Shawcroft née Lee. His father George was born in 1853 in Riddings Derbyshire and his mother Elizabeth Lee was born in Teversall in 1855 they were married in Mansfield in 1875 and went on to have the following children , Abraham b1874 Huthwaite, Samuel b1876 Huthwaite, John George b1878 Huthwaite, William b1883 Skegby, Elizabeth b1886 Skegby and Joseph b1891 Skegy. His mother Elizabeth died in 1894 in Mansfield she was 38 yrs of age. His father George then went on to marry his second wife Emma Busby (b1856 Edwinstowe) in 1904 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district and they went on to have a son Frederick b1897 Warsop. In the 1911 census his father George is living at 42 Wharf Head , Pinxton, Derbyshire he is shown as being 58 yrs a coal miner loader he is living with his wife Emma 55 yrs and their son Frederick 14 yrs they state they have been married for 16 yrs and have had 1 child. Samuel married Alexandra Hardstaff (born 25th January 1881) in 1898 in Mansfield, they went on to have 8 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Elizabeth born 17th January 1901, Samuel born 1st June 1903, Mary born 7th August 1904 and William Shawcroft born 7th August 1906 all were born in Sutton in Ashfield. In the 1911 census the family are living at 9 Spring Street, Sutton in Ashfield and are shown as Sam 36 yrs a coal miner he is living with his wife Alexandra 31 yrs and their children Elizabeth 11 yrs, Samuel 9yrs, Mary 7 yrs and William 5 yrs, also living with them is Joseph Shawcroft 21 yrs a coal miner he is listed as a boarder. Commencing 10th January 1916 his widow was awaeded a pension of 22 shillings and 6 pence a week.
