William Hurt

William Hurt was born in 1899 in West Bridgford and was the son of the late John a domestic gardener and Maria Hurt née Pickering of 17 Highfield Grove, West Bridgford. His father John was born in 1856 in Kneesall and his mother Maria Pickering was born in Stickney, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1883 in Nottingham and went on to have 10 children, Maria b1885 Woodborough, John b1887 Woodborough, George Wilfred b1889 Woodborough, Mabel b1892 Woodborough, Ernest born 1893 Nottm, Joseph Woodward b1895 Nottm, Susannah May b1897 Nottm, William b1899 West Bridgford, Annie b1901 West Bridgford and Harold b1907 West Bridgford. In the 1911 census the family are living at The Hall Lodge, West Bridgford and are shown as John 55 yrs a domestic gardener , he is living with his wife Maria 49 yrs and their children Maria 26 yrs a pattern girl, George Wilfred 22 yrs a domestic gardener, Mable 19 yrs a clipper in the lace trade, Joseph Woodward 16 yrs a lace machine teller, Susannah 14 yrs an errand girl, William 12 yrs a scholar, Annie 10 yrs a scholar and Harold 4 yrs. His father John died in 1913 he was 56 yrs old the death was registered in the Basford Registration district. Five of their sons were to serve in the Great War two of whom died.
