John Thomas Porter was born in 1887 at Wigan, he was baptised on 29th May 1887 at St Michaels Church, Wigan, the son of James and Mary Elizabeth Porter née Kelly, of Wigan. James was born in 1851 at Bedford, Lancashire, Mary Elizabeth Kelly was born in 1853 at Moore, Cheshire, they were married on 9th September 1876 at Wigan, they had 7 children. He married Harriet Stubbs (born 13th January 1891 Lancashire) on 1st January 1910 their marriage was recorded in the Wigan registration district, they had 3 children, Florence b1910 Annie born 23rd March 1910 and Elsie born 26th March 1912 In 1911 the family were living at 57 Soho Street, Newtown Wigan, John Thomas is 24 yrs and an iron moulder he is living with his wife Harriet 20 yrs and their daughter Florence 1 year old Commencing 28th January 1918 his widow Harriett was awarded a pension of 24 shillings and 2 pence a week she was living at 77 Scott Lane, Newton, Wigan His widow later lived at 26, York St., Netherfield, Notts (CWGC) She died in 1977 still living at Netherfield.

Military History

Corporal John Thomas Porter enlisted at Wigan whilst residing at Salford, he was killed in action on 15th July 1917 and is buried at Coxyde Military Cemetery, Belgium
