Family History

Son of William Newcombe and Maria Holland, of 49, Dunstan St., Netherfield, Notts. George William was born c1898 at Netherfield. He was one of four surviving children of William and Maria Holland. William was a Railway engine driver. In 1901 the family were living at No 13 Meadow Cottages, Garnet Street, Netherfield. By 1911 the family, parents and children Esther, George, Phyllis and Arthur were living at 79 Curzon street in Netherfield. They had moved to 49 Dunstan Street by 1917 when George enlisted.

Military History

George enlisted at Nottingham aged 19 years and 1 month on the 10 July 1917. He served in England until 9 Dec 1917 then went to France on 10 Dec 1917. He was declared Missing and his body was not found so he is commemorated on the Arras memorial, in the Pas de Calais region of France. He was eligible for the Victory and British medals
