Family History

Jesse Guiver (junior) was born in 1882 the son of Jesse Guiver (senior) a boot and shoe maker and Annie Guiver née West of Melbourn Cambridgeshire. Jesse Guiver (senior) and Annie West were both born in 1848 at Melbourne, Cambridgeshire, they were married in 1869 at Royston, Hertfordshire, they had 9 children but 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family were living at Rose Lane, Melbourne, Jessie (senior) was 63 yrs of age and a boot and shoe maker and repairer, living with his wife Annie 63 yrs and 3 of their children including Jessie (junior) 29 yrs a farm labourer. Jesse married Ellen Wollin (Nellie) born 3rd June 1882 in 1911 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell registration district, they lived at 23 Wallett Street, Netherfield and had 2 children, Phyllis Maud born 12th June 1912 and Leonard Guiver born 27th January 1914. Commencing 15th April 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence.

Military History

Private Jesse Guiver enlisted on 7th September 1914 at Nottingham, giving his age as 32 yrs , he was posted with the service number 190736 to the Royal Engineers. Landing in France, on 28th February 1915. He was wounded on 8th March 1917 when he was struck by a pick in the hand whilst working on railway construction and was admitted to the 37th casualty clearing station for treatment. He died of wounds on 23rd September 1917 and is buried at Godewaersvelde British Cemetery.
