George Francis was the son of Francis Albert Popple and Mary Jane Popple nee Hunt. Francis Albert was born in Stamford, Lincolnshire, in 1868 (J/A/S Stamford), the son of Joseph and Selina Popple. He was baptised in the Stamford Circuit Lincoln on 11 October 1868. In 1881 at the age of 12 he was living at the Railway Inn, 20 St Leonard's Street, Stamford, with his parents, numerous siblings and a number of boarders. Mary Jane Hunt was the daughter of George Hunt and was born in Barnet, London, on 22 November 1872 (O/N/D Barnet). Francis Albert and Mary Jane were married in the parish church of St Mary, Finchley, Barnet, on 6 August 1894 (J/A/S Hendon). Francis was a fitter's labourer and his father, Joseph, a brewer, while Mary's father was a gardener. Francis and Mary were both living at 64 Pollard Road, Hendon, at the time of their marriage. They had four children all of whom survived childhood: Maude Eva b. Hendon 1895 (J/A/S Hendon), George Francis b. Hendon 21 September 1896 (O/N/D Hendon), Florence Annie b. Carlton 10 May 1901 (A/M/J Basford) and Walter Frederick b. Netherfield 1909 (A/M/J Basford). In 1901 the family was living in Carlton; Francis was a railway labourer, but by 1911 had moved to 2 Curzon Street, Netherfield. Francis (42) was now a blacksmith in a loco department while his son George (14) was a telegraph boy also in a loco department. Also in the household on the night of the census were Mary Jane (38), Maude Eva, a winder in a cotton mill, Florence Annie (9) and Walter Frederick (1). It appears from an Outward Passenger List that Maude Eva (16), described as a servant, and George (14) a labourer, sailed from Liverpool to Quebec on the White Star Line in June 1911, a few months after the 1911 Census. There is also a record of a Francis Popple (45) sailing from Liverpool to Quebec, Canada, on 31 July 1914 and this record may refer to George's father. George named his father as his next of kin when he attested in Canada in December 1915, giving Francis' address as 32 Deabill Street, Netherfield. However, at the time of his death in 1917 his parents were living at 17 Manvers Street, Netherfield, Nottingham, the address also given on the later CWGC record. If the Francis Popple on the Outward Passenger List of 1914 was George's father he had clearly returned to England by December 1915 at the latest. Francis died on 29 September 1932; he was then living at 1 Highclere-villas, Gedling, with Mary Jane who was awarded probate. The widowed Mary Jane was recorded on the 1939 England & Wales Register living at 28 Deabill Street, Netherfield; she died in August 1940 (O/N/D Basford) aged 67. Of George's siblings: Maude Eva emigrated to Canada in 1911 and married Walter Ross Bishop in Saskatchewan on 1 September 1914; they had 11 children. She died on 14 July 1979 in Victoria, British Columbia, and there is a record of the burial of a Maude Eva Bishop nee Popple (b. 1895, England) in Edam Cemetery, Edam, Lloydminster Census Division, Sasketchewan, Canada. Florence Annie married Alfred B Storey (b. 2 June 1900) in 1926 (J/A/S Nottingham) and in 1939 they were living in Nottingham; Florence's occupation was given as 'unpaid domestic duties' while Alfred was a general labourer at a gas works. Florence died in August 1963 (J/A/S Nottingham) aged 62. Walter Frederick married Lucy A Shiopman in 1933 (J/A/S Basford). In 1939 they were living at 5 Lockerbie Street, Carlton, Nottingham; Walter was a confectioner (cakes). He died on 16 June 1965 (A/M/J Basford) aged 56.
