Family History

Horace Hirst was born in 1897 at Balby, Yorkshire the son of John a locomotive railway engineman and Jane Hirst née Wormersley of 4 Clumber Avenue Netherfield Nottingham. John was born in 1862 at Greasbrough, Yorkshire, Jane Wormersley was born in 1864 at Hartstone, Northamptonshire, they were married in 1892 their marriage was recorded in the Huddersfield registration district, they had 5 children. In 1911 the family are living at 4 Clumber Ave, Netherfield, John is 49 yrs is a railway engineman, he is living with his wife and family Horace is 14 yrs and is a butchers errand boy.

Military History

Private Horace Hirst enlisted at Hucknall whilst residing at Netherfield, he served with the 1/5th battalion South Staffordhshire Regiment. He went missing in action on 29th April 1918 and was later reported killed in action on that date. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
