Family History

Alfred Pointing junior was born in 1885 and was the son of the late Alfred Pointing (senior) a french polisher and the late Mary Jane Pointing née White. Alfred (senior) was born in 1862 at High Wycombe, he died in 1906 aged 44 yrs, Mary Jane White was born in 1864, she died in 1905 aged 41yrs, married in 1885 their marriage was recorded in the High Wycombe registration district, they had 2 further children, Edith Edna b1887 and George Henry b1890 both were born in High Wycombe. In 1911 we find both Alfred and his brother living at 1 Coach and Horse Yard, Easton Place, High Wycombe, they are both living with Ralph Anderson 58 yrs a grocer and his family, Alfred 25 yrs is a french polisher and George 20 yrs also a french polisher. At the time of Alfred's death he next of kin was shown as his brother George Henry of 88, Curzon St., Netherfield, Nottingham.

Military History

Private Alfred Pointing enlisted on 31st August 1914 at Tottenham, London, giving his age as 29 yrs and 108 days, he was a french polisher. He was posted to the 2nd battalion Middlexsex Regiment and landed in France on 18th February 1915 and joined his battalion in the field on 22nd February 1915. He was killed in action on 1st July 1916 the first day of the battle of the Somme. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
