Sidney Lawrence Walker was born in 1891 and was the son of Mrs. Sarah Ann Swanwick, of 51, Willow Rd., Carlton, Nottingham. His mother Sarah Ann Walker was born in 1869 at Newark, she had 2 other children Alfred Leaper Walker b1888 at Carlton and Minnie Lawrence Walker b1895 at Carlton. (she may not have been married when she had her 3 children.) In the 1911 census his mother is living at 21 Crossway Cottages , Woodend . Fillongley, she is shown as Sarah Ann Swanwick 42 yrs a cotton winder born at Newark, she is living with her husband Samuel Swanwick 40 yrs a platelayer and her daughter Minnie Lawrence Walker 15 yrs a cotton winder born at Carlton, Samuel Swanwick stated on the census that he had been married for 8 yrs and had had 1 child. (Their marriage was recorded in 1902 in the Bingham Registration district.) In the same 1911 census Sidney Lawrence has left home, he is living at 21 Crossway Cottages, Woodend, Fillongley he is shown as being 19 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is shown as a boarder living with Alfred Walker (his older brother) 23 yrs a coal miner hewer and his family.
Lance Corporal Sidney Lawrence Walker enlisted on 17th September 1914 at Birmingham giving his age as 23 yrs and 4 months. He served with the 2/3rd (South Midland) Field Ambulance. He embarked from Southampton on 29th March 1915 disembarking the following day at Le Harve. He was wounded in action on 21st August 1915 (a gun shot wound to his buttocks ) Promoted on 17th August 1916 to Lance Corporal he was killed in action on 5th December 1917 and is buried at Fins New British Cemetery Sorel-Le-Grand
